The practical basics for Ban Chang: banking and ATMs, healthcare and nearby hospitals, mobile SIMs and internet, shopping, and the essentials for visiting or settling.
Evergreen guide. We write what stays true; prices, hours, rules and venue details change constantly — verify current specifics with official sources before relying on them.
The essentials
- Money: banks and ATMs are present in town; the big-bank branches and currency needs are also easily met in nearby Pattaya/Rayong. Cash still rules smaller vendors, though card and QR (PromptPay) acceptance grows;
- Healthcare: local clinics and pharmacies cover day-to-day; for anything serious, the international-standard private hospitals of Pattaya and Rayong are a short drive — worth identifying your nearest before you need it. Travel/health insurance that genuinely covers you is basic kit;
- SIMs & internet: Thailand's networks (AIS, True, dtac) cover the area well; tourist SIMs at the airport, easy top-ups in town, and home fibre available for residents;
- Shopping: markets and supermarkets locally; big malls and specialist shopping in Pattaya/Rayong;
- Language: less English than the resort cities — a little Thai goes a long way (our language guide).
For visitors vs movers
- Visiting: U-Tapao makes arrival easy; base in town or use it as a quiet-coast add-on to a Pattaya/Ko Samet trip (day trips);
- Moving: the visa, housing and settling basics are the standard Thailand ones — plan around them, and lean on the resident community for local knowledge (living here);
- Verify everything time-sensitive — hours, prices, transport and services shift; official and current sources over any guide.
